Pardon me but this is my first time...

I hate feeling like I don't have a clue. I have been feeling that way a lot lately in regards to mothering. I am soooo grateful for 1. Motherly instinct (I can't imagine being more lost than I already am) 2. My mothers (and all of the other professional mothers) opinion. I hate the media and all of the information swarming in my head that "they" say about babies. It drives me crazy that there are so many opinions and options and choices out there.
So now you get to hear my latest worries/concerns/questions and feel free to comment where you feel you might have something to add to my swirling head, it is much appreciated and will be filed as necessary and then filtered through later when there is no longer any more room ;o)

Annie's car seat has been tipping over in the the 4-runner and even more so in the Camry which has leather seats. Yesterday as I was on my way to go meet a friend she was in a car accident. She was rear ended and spun all the way around into the median. When i got to her house I found Annie's seat tipped forward and her poor sleeping head about to fall off! I thought what if it were me in that accident! I am one of the 5 out of 6 people who doesn't have her car seat fastened properly!! So today I watched a bunch of You Tube videos on how to install an infant seat and found the old seat belt fastener thingy that had come off when the car was stolen and I think that I might have this one figured out, I will let you know! Praise God for inventing You Tube :o)

I am still struggling with the whole growth spurt idea. I know that she is going through one and that babies are constantly changing. However she really needs to stop :o) One day she takes 3 naps one of those being 3 hours long, some days she takes 3 45 min naps, twice now she didnt nap at all (that was fun). She seems hungry all afternoon long and doesn't want to eat at all when she gets up in the morning what is that about!? She pulls on her ears while she eats and I think she may rip one off some day... does this mean they hurt?

Here is one I KNOW I will get feedback on. The pediatrician, a different one than last time mind you, said at 4 months that I could start rice cereal but I didnt have to yet (Thank you for your permission). now at her 6 month appt she said I could start her on any single ingredient food that I wanted to. but she wanted me to give her some sort of cereal because she is not getting enough Iron from my milk! I have heard this before however I just wonder how true it is. I was thinking about giving her some cereal anyhow sometime soon, but I am seriously tempted to not do it for another 3 months because they check her blood levels at 9 months and I would LOVE to know her iron levels :o) So my question is when did you start solids and do you regret starting to early. I have heard a few different opinions on this ( i think Melissa blogged on persevering with breastfeeding only for a year) and Kris said she regretted it because it is expensive and once you start you cant stop! :o)

That is all of the first time mommy head swirling thoughts I can think of right now. I will post a little later when I take her 6month picture and let you all know how big my little tiny has gotten.

I always waited until my girls really showed interest in food, like started trying to rip it out of my hands when I was eating. They were around 6 months maybe a little older. I started with extremely watered down cereal mainly just to start teaching them how to eat from a spoon which took quite awhile. But I still mainly breastfed and always offered them breastmilk before food, as I thought it was more nutrional. I have also read and tried it with Eliza that mashed bananas are a good starting place because hey have the similar sweetness that breastmilk does, but be careful too many bananas will equal constipation and that is no fun with the little ones. As for the iron thing they always told me that my girls weren't getting enough and tested them at around 9 to 12 months and said they were low. They even gave me iron drops for Eliza. I tried to give them to her once and she refused. They smelled and tasted like sulfur. I wasn't about to force it, instead I just really tried to get her to eat more greens and I myself ate more iron rich things to help it build up in my milk. We had her tested again a month later and her iron was perfect. Of course they thought it was the drops, hehehe. Anyways thats my two sense hope it helps

and also.... as if my first response wasn''t enough. Don't feel bad about the carseat ours did the same thing. We actually had a lady firefighter come to our moms group to talk about carseat safety. She said they actually have to take a 40 hour course just on proper installation and safety of carseats!! 40 hours!! She said that you can pretty much swingby any fire station and they should have at least one person certified in the carseat area and they are happy to check your installation and show you how to do it the right way for free.

I don't have any experience to share since we are 3 months behind you (although the same size). I will share your new mom agony with the naps though, it is one of those things that we have yet to figure out. I don't complain too much b/c she sleeps well at night. I have always heard people talking about starting cereal/solids around 4-6 months. Everything I read says to wait until at least 6 months, so I am planning on starting at 6 months.

The carseat thing is worth working out, but otherwise, much of it is preference. Just relax about most of it - she's not going to be in the slow reading group at school because of a two or even six month difference in starting solids. I don't think there is any right or wrong way to do it. It's just your way.

That said, I prefer to wait until at least six months or more to do solids. I find that my kids tend to wean earlier than I'd like and if I start solids, they do it even sooner.

I started Eli on solids at six and a half months, but not cereal. I started with a little bit of mashed up banana, then I baked him a sweet potato. We moved on to a couple more things, but no rice cereal. I did make him some brown rice when we were having it one night and I threw his in the food processor. We didn't ever give Libby one drop of boxed infant rice cereal and she's just fine.
I would wait as long as possible.

Tell the pediatrician that you're feeding Annie liver since it's a good source of iron.
