Its About Time

I blogged.

Wonderful things happen around here

Everyday things happen around here

Things I want to look back on and remember happen around here

Yet I fail to Blog them like a good little memory keeper aka former Scrapbooker, turned, Hasn't developed a picture in a year and a half woman...

Fun little things they say that I never want to forget like this conversation that just went down between a certain 3 year old and myself

"Mom I love big peckers"
"excuse me?" as I turn around to look at her
"I love big peckers just like my daddy does" as she is holding up a toy red and green pePPER!!

I realized in our trip to Dayton tuesday to visit friends that she never stops talking... ever! She talked all the way to Dayton, 50min straight. That night I was trying to brush her teeth and she was trying to talk through the teeth brushing. She also likes me to floss her teeth (I know, what crazy 3 year old likes to have her teeth flossed?) I told her to stop trying to talk while I brush so she thought it would be ok to talk while we flossed. This doesnt work either. Neither does it work to try to taste the floss while mommy is trying to use the floss... this attempt ended us both in extreme giggles.

Last night she and I looked for Pink Baby with no avail and I sent her to bed without her. Her father came home and the looking resumed with no Pink baby to be found. He put her back to bed with a stand in baby doll. When she still wouldnt go to sleep we continued the search (I had seen her both on the kitchen counter and the pantry just hours before) I finally found her behind the TV. When I returned the lost baby to its owner she said sheepishly "oh the Alligators were getting her...for pretend" Ah yes, thank you for the clarification on that one because I was wondering why I had to fight off a mob of hungry alligators from around the television set.

And because I love you I will share the fact that if you freeze fresh (not brown) sliced bananas and then puree them in a food processor and add just a touch of PB and Coco powder it tastes like a mix between Ice Cream and Pudding and it is wonderful! I haven't made any sort of faux dessert during my fast but I was just too curious to try it. Annie and Mia and I shared a bowl of approx 3 bananas with 1T PB and 1 T cocoa powder. It was fun!

Kentucky is Not Maui

In Kentucky I wake up around 8:00 to a little face in mine either whining "im houngry" or saying "its a sunny day" weather it is or not. In Maui I wake up around 5:00 to a day I know will be sunny.

In Kentucky I don't jump out of bed fully rested and ready for a day of adventures, In Maui I do!

In Kentucky I go to bed between 10-11:00 fully exhausted but wondering what I actually accomplished in the day. In Maui I go to bed between 7:30-9 fully exhausted from a jam packed action filled adventure day.

In Kentucky any given commute consists of construction, traffic, some nice green hills depending on where you are going. In Maui a commute consists of breathtaking Ocean views filled with jumping whales and crashing waves as well as nice rolling hills (i guess they would technically be volcanic mountains).

In Kentucky when we go out to eat there are children that force attention onto themselves and away from a handsome husband sitting across from me. In Maui there is just a handsome husband and a friendly sister and brother in law to hold many conversations with.

In Kentucky I have bulk taco seasoning in the pantry and eat beef tacos at least weekly because they are cheap and they make my husband happy. In Maui there are FISH TACOS... they make me happy!

In Kentucky there is laundry, dishes, bills, diapers etc. In Maui I ran the dishwasher and did a load of laundry once!

In Kentucky there is sun shine that looks deceptively warm in January. In Maui there is warm sunshine in January!!

In Kentucky there are people who know me and so I don't dare put on a wetsuit while pregnant for fear that someone i know might see me. In Maui I throw on a wet suit no questions asked no fears... until my baby sister puts a picture of me in said wetsuit on the Internet!! :o)

In Maui the saying is "No worries"
However in Kentucky there is my babies and my family and my friends and many worries that I would gladly take any day with my hope and happiness in Jesus...and a little bit of hope that there might be another trip sometime to someplace wonderful like Maui!

Cutest Hula Girls you have ever seen!!

I hear a pounding sound and "Damn! Damn, Damn!!...." I wander into the dining room and find Annie who looks up and says "Mama, look at this penny, I am damming it with my fork.... What's In My Head (in too many words :o)

When I was in Elementary School I often said I would live with my parents forever, I don't remember ruling out getting married, just that I would always live with my parents, one big happy family home, that feeling carried over into Jr High. In my early High School years I just wanted to be a mom, I had zero ambitions to go to college I just wanted to get married and be a mom. Once senior year hit and people were making college plans and I had yet to even go on a single date (my choice, I have a blog post on that swirling around in my head for later) making the motherhood thing look a few years off I starting pursuing my only real enjoyment in life, cooking. I sent away for applications to Le Cordon Bleu in Boston (there are 16 campuses in the u.s now!) and pictured myself becoming an independent, carefree, refined, Bostonian woman. I toured the brand new tiny culinary school at Cincinnati State and was encouraged that I didn't have to become independent & refined, I could live at home and practice my cooking skills for my future husband and children... and parents :o)
I just didn't feel the call to culinary school after all and post graduation I got a job at a local day care center.

I was pretty care free & independent (still living with the parents of course) at this time, making a decent pay check for a girl who was driving her parents old mini van and living at home. Running around that fall having a BLAST with one boy, but just not feeling it and all the while swooning over another who had gone away to college.

I was heavily involved in our college group at church and doing stuff every night of the week. My sister and friends all decided to apply to Nursing School and so I did too, thinking I could be a maternity nurse but nothing else! Jayne even told me that I would make a great maternity nurse and that woman oughtta know :o)

I ended up at NKU the following year along with one of the other 3 girls that inspired me and my college days had begun.

I liked school, I HATED gen eds (how can you love an English class that is centered around the show The Simpson's?? or a tree hugging teacher who required me to go to a lecture by one "Julia Butterfly" who literally lived in a redwood tree for 738 days? ) but loved my nursing classes.
I then started dating "swoon boy" in January after spending Christmas break together and quit my job at the unreliable, scary, I reported child abuse, day care center and swore I would never look at those places the same again! I worked for a brief period at the local County Market and loved it because of all the people I got to talk to however $$ soon found me in the form of cleaning one house a week and making more than a week of shifts at the grocery store making minimum wage.

I bought my first car when the parents van predictably croaked and I was living the life. Waking up early going to the gym 6 days a week weighed a whopping 127 pounds and thought I was fat of course :o) I was travelling to Cedarville most every weekend to watch soccer games and although I am, and have always been, a huge proponent of living in the moment and stopping to smell the flowers, and I was definitely enjoying those 4 years, I was still dreaming of the someday of getting married and having babies.

The married part happened the winter after he graduated and we had 2 1/2 years of being what my pastor calls "DINK's" (dual income, no kids). I also cherished this time of just us, figuring out what it meant to be us. I graduated and started my first and current nursing job during this time and was so very happy.

When Annie was born I remember thinking often how funny it was that I had an infant for a best friend. I would like to think that Joe was my best friend at the time, but come on. A best friend is one you talk to, share all your thoughts with, play with, watch movies, cook, bake, shop, take walks, you name it, you do it together and have a blast. And that was Annie and I. I started working 1 day a week after she was born and therefore our days were centered around each other. We would get up twice a night and therefore sleep till 10. Eat breakfast do one of the aforementioned events, take a 3-4 hour nap, cook, bake, clean for our man, we even showered together!! Then Joe would come home and he was a welcome addition to our little clique.

I wasn't in denial, I knew that when baby #2 came along things would change. Baby #2 doesn't get to snuggle with mom in bed until 10am, she barely gets held at all. She gets me, shared by 2 during the day and 3 at night. Having 2 rocked my selfish world and I am a better woman for it. I look forward to the addition of #3 and how he/she will fit into our busy little lives. I think/hope #3 will be an easier transition now that I have reality in mind.

Mothering isn't easy, its selfless. It has to be. It puts the needs of many others in front of your own and the most frustrating times for me is when I am already serving one and another is demanding attention at the same time! It makes me shake my head and wonder why I can't change bed sheets without a snotty nose crying at my feet to be held or fed. I can't wipe a butt without another one saying she has to go potty.

On the rare occasion that I get to wake up on my own without an alarm and without a face in mine saying "im hooooongry" I am possibly the happiest woman on the face of the earth for a few minutes.

Ill admit sometimes I like to try to hide from them just to see how long it will last. I will get them interested in something and then sneak away like the other day, I was exercising in my room with the lights off so they wouldn't know where I was and I probably got 10 min in before I had one jumping on my bed helping me count to 10 while the other one had her finger in my face wagging it saying one, one, one, one, which actually made me laugh pretty hard.

Family Vacation is a funny term. They should just call it parenting away from home. Other than the fact that you don't have tasks like bills to pay, there is still laundry to do, meals to make, butts to scrub, discipline and fights to break up and the ever watchful eye so someone doesn't drown or kill themselves.

So why am I starting to get anxiety about leaving them in the loving arms of my sister, in their own home, in their own beds for what will be 8 glorious days of non mothering bliss???? Because they are wonderful, they are my world, they are my responsibility from God and I worry about someone else having to get up twice a night to tell Annie to go back to sleep. How simple is that, she doesn't require standing on your head, a special song, a special blanket or anything, just "Annie, lay down and go to sleep and quit screaming for Daddy, he is sleeping" I think my sister can handle that just fine... Right???

The Lords Work In Me

I am too wordy. I know this about myself. It is something that I am working on. I hate that when I want to recount a story for memory's sake or your mild amusement that it turns into a mostly boring and too many details novel.
So I am going to attempt to get my point across and convey my feelings on this one in as few words as possible.

The History
My food consumption habits are out of control. I used to think I had terrible metabolism. I would work out 3-4 days at the gym and would not loose an ounce. I would hear others say "I work out so I can eat whatever I want". I liked that thought and decided I could live that way too. Then I would go home and make a batch of chocolate chip cookies and eat half the batter, bake the rest because "I don't like baked cookies, just the dough" and then freeze them and end up eating all of those also. I would buy ice cream that would be gone in 2 days... consumed by me alone. So clearly my metabolism was normal and I was hitting it over the head with full gallons of ice cream and bowls of cookie dough.

The Turning Point
I believe it takes a certain amount of spiritual maturity to respond to the call to fast. I don't think I have been at this level of maturity for long. I have felt the Lord pricking my heart about fasting a few times in the recent past, however I was always either pregnant or nursing and therefore didn't give it more than a passing thought.
A few months ago I was feeling the Lord tug at my heart and telling me that fasting comes in many forms and looks different for many people. He was just asking that I listen and obey.

At about this same time I walked into women's bible study with a banana in hand as part of my breakfast. My WONDERFUL friend and group leader commented on my healthy choice and I looked her square in the eye and admitted to her that something had to change. In my mind that morning I was thinking the standard female thought "Ill fast from sweets for a week and start eating healthy and that will kick off a 3 month pre-Maui worthy diet.
Ann challenged me to a month fast from sweets. !!!!!!!!!! I think those 10 exclamation points should count as a full sentence, no a full thought. A month! Without ANYTHING! Ugh!
My WONDERFULEST friend Jessi and sister in Jesus, and I had a picnic lunch after class that day and she launched into how she was ready to diet and loose the baby weight from her pregnancy 3 mo ago. I told her I was thinking the same thing and I told her about my history of eating habits and Ann's challenge. Jess shared with me that she once fasted for a year to overcome a sinful eating mentality! Oh boy God! What are you saying to me???

What God Was Saying
"Trust me, turn to me when you desire to turn to food, trust that I can deliver you from your unhealthy eating mentality"
"Trust that I can fill you up and that I am your portion"
"know that you are an addict and need to treat this as a sin pattern"
"lead a life dependent on Me"
"I will teach you more about just healthy eating habits, I will teach you how to apply the gospel of the cross to your life on a daily basis"

James 1:12 Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial because when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life that God promised to those who love him.

"If we want to overcome sin we need to change not only our actions but sinful desires as well " -Brad Brant

Ephesians 4:19 having lost all sensitivity they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity with a continual lust for more (paraphrased for application)
22-24 you were taught with regard to your former way of life to put off the old self which is being corrupted by deceitful desires to be made new in the attitude of your minds, and to put on a NEW SELF created to be LIKE GOD in true righteousness and holiness (who doesn't want to be like Him?)

What God Has Done
That all happened on October 19th. Turns out that was a big week for me I got pregnant that week also. If any of you have ever been pregnant or known a pregnant person, you know there is such a thing as cravings. Enough said.
It has been hard. It saddens me that it should be so hard at times. Like I shouldn't be so dependent on something so indulgent as a quart of buckeye blitz ice cream from Graters.
Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas & American culture scream sweets, indulgences, and special traditions baked by loved ones.
So there has been struggling. I have clung to Rom 5 that through our Sufferings bring Perseverance which adds Character and with that there is Hope, and hope does not disappoint us because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit whom he has given us!!!

I feel like I am cheating people like Corrie Ten Boom who probably clung to those verses as they clung to their lives and watched their loved ones die. Like those verses are applicable to her in her suffering but not me in my menial little fast. But God has revealed otherwise to me. He is teaching me what it means to turn to Him and look to Him for answers and application in all areas of my life and He is making me a stronger child because of this. He has been faithful in teaching me new things and bringing me new trials and temptations through this. And I know that as a result I will have a deeper understanding of him and relationship with him as a result which is what one would require to go through a trial like the one Corrie Ten Boom endured. Even Corrie had to start somewhere :o)

Summary
So there you have my mini novel. There are so many more words I could have used to tell my story, but I hope you had the time to read it and hopefully be blessed by it. If you see me ask me about my holy encounter with a Chocolate Lava Cake at our worlds best anniversary dinner.

I feel the Lord telling me to fast for a year. It took about a month to work out with Him all the why's and what for's. But it boils down to I knew he was saying I could benefit from more than a month. I questioned the interesting timing of the pregnancy and in conversation with other people who abstain from sweets for many reasons I have decided that the Lord may be giving me the gift of an easier post partum experience if I remain sweets free for a year as some believe that there is a correlation between sugar and controlling hormones.
So here's to my next 8 months with prayers that He changes me more and more!

2 Cute Superheros

I love my adorable little super heros. Of course the next day when the influential 6 year old male cousin was gone they were suddenly a princess and a queen with these capes on :o)
